I saw the exact same thing... and simply deleting ~/.config/MonoDevelop
before starting MD worked for me.

(if I remember correctly, in my case, it seemed that the XML editor plugin
was causing some problems.  incompatible I suppose? )

All I can say is that something seems to be wrong in your setup. Try
uninstalling MD, make sure the /usr/lib/monodevelop and
~/.config/MonoDevelop directories are deleted, and install MD again.
