[Mono-list] Using GDB with C#

I am trying to debug C# compiled using gmcs -debug with GDB.
I can run my programme under GDB, but it doesn't see any debug symbols, and can't set break points or show backtrace.
I am running ubuntu 7.04 with GDB 6.6-debian.
I have added a .gdbinit as described on the mono website (http://www.mono-project.com/Debugging).

Am I missing something really obvious?
