[Mono-list] What tools are used for locating packages?

So I just installed gnome-sharp so I could play with Vfs but I couldn't get
my code to compile because I was trying to use gmcs *.cs
-pkg:gnome-vfs-sharp
when the actual package is gnome-vfs-sharp-2.0, I had no way of knowing this
and randomly found a paste-bin on google with it.

Are there any tools I could've used to figure this out?
