Thanks. I knew of Java OS (now considered a legacy system by Sun) but not of
JOS. It looks like JOS is defunct now or, at least, the development is very,
very slow (last events on the wiki date back to 2004). Looking around I found
JNode: http://www.jnode.org/ . JNode seems to be alive (last version was
realeased on March 2006).
