My /etc/exports on server looks like this:
/export/home     @ppslab(sync,rw)
/export/usr_local  @ppslab(sync,ro)

Another detail (perhaps important):
NFS/NIS/samba server runs on redhat 8.0  (yes  I know.. pretty old )
'madril' is on CentOS 4.3
'madril' is the workstation on which I am trying to run mono amd mcs
