Many thanks for you help.

I have now installed the correct rpm's and a simple "hello world" of one text box and two buttons on a form runs correctly. Two other pre-existing applications do not, but they user more complex controls, one of which I know is not yet supported (listView). I can build up my experience from what works.

I have used WinZip for so long (with Windows zip files) that I didn't even question that it could fail on tar.gz when it produced plausible results. I preferred to look for the more exotic explanations (verging on conspiracy theory!).
