There were actually 2 problems, I think:
* on Mandrake, there are 2 config files for the MySQL server: 
/etc/my.cnf and /etc/sysconfig/mysqld. The option --sip-network was 
actually in mysqld

* Not sure about this one: Mysql had the option --old-password enabled. 
But it looks like ByteFX uses the new password scheme. The password hash 
sent by ByteFX is not the same that is stored in mysql.user(Password)
