As the output states, you probably need to set the PKG_CONFIG_PATH 
environment variable to look in the directories with the *.pc files. On 
my Fedora FC3 build I use the following:
    $ export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/lib/pkgconfig:/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig
