Strange. I just tried login into anoncvs and...:

gpanjav@k7:~/temp$ export
CVSROOT=:pserver:anonymous@anoncvs.go-mono.com:/mono
gpanjav@k7:~/temp$ cvs login
Logging in to :pserver:anonymous@anoncvs.go-mono.com:2401/mono
CVS password: 
gpanjav@k7:~/temp$ 

...it just worked.

May be we need more details about your system if it still fails for you.
