I can assure you that being able to compile the compiler in less than 3
minutes instead of more than 10 helps a lot in getting us self-hosting.
And when that is the result of just one day of profiling and hacking
it looks like time well spent. The patches that went in were not
micro-optimizations that I agree are not useful at this point
(though some that gave small speed benefits were more corrections for
sloppy coding).
