Ok, that makes sense. Maybe the key phrase from the MS spec:
"FileStream buffers input and output for better performance."
I'll try to add some buffering to FileStream.cs.

PS are there any profilers for MS .NET apart from VS? I see there's some stuff
in the tool developer's samples, but it just seems to be a library.
