[Mono-list] compiling hello.cs

I just downloaded mono for the first time and I confess I'm quite ignorant
about how this all fits together (which is part of why I want to play with
it). However, I got stuff compiled and installed but when I try to compile
a .cs file I get the following:

[jamin 12:41:05]~>mcs hello.cs

(process:19813): ** WARNING **: Could not find assembly System.Xml /home/jamin/install/lib/System.Xml.dll
/home/jamin/install/bin/mcs: line 2: 19813 Segmentation fault (core dumped) /home/jamin/install/bin/mint /home/jamin/install/bin/mcs.exe $*

I'm using Linux (I don't have a windows box anywhere). Is it impossible to
compile a .cs file on Linux right now? Or do I have something wrong with
my setup?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
