[Mono-list] intro, and a few questions...

Dear all,

I have been following the mono list for some while, just out of
curiosity, and have become somewhat interested in knowing more about it.
But, I lack the overall design philosophy and aims with it. Thus, I have
a few questions:

Is it correct to state that mono is an open source implementation of
Microsoft's C#?
Is mono design similar to that of Java?
How does Microsoft's .NET relate to Mono?

Shortly, I know close to nothing about mono and would like some
introductory information. TIA.
