Check out #mono on the OFTC (Open and Free Technology Community)
network. The server is irc.oftc.net
There is an IRC link bot (written in C# and running on Mono, ask in the
channel for details) between it and #mono on irc.gnome.org so you won't
miss out on any of the action.
In my experience, OFTC has been very stable, without the incessant
netsplits Freenode (formerly openprojects) has always suffered and which
GIMPnet is suffering from now. It also has nice features like NickServ
so nobody can steal your nick once you register it.
GIMPnet will probably remain the preferred network due to its GNOME
associations, so think of this as a temporary alternative until the
trouble blows over.
