[Mono-list] is it still not possible to compile mcs on linux?

mcs requires the cygwin package for making on windows.. 
I guess I am wondering what the issues are that keep it 
from compiling on linux?

if cygwin is a "unix" environment for windows, is there 
some technical issue or library issue that keeps mcs from
being able to compile and run from linux?  

I don't have (seriously) windows availble..  are there
plans to bring mcs to linux soon?
