Don't worry, no need to install a new OS...

Please have a look on the download page:

I think that even provides a recent version of MonoDevelop. Yes:

So after adding the Xamarin repository to your apt sources, apt-get
update &&  apt-get install mono-devel monodevelop should work for you.
