What about the somewhat related bug
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=630903 with not storing the
mode in the xml serialization.

I have even posted a patch which has gotten no response.  I would even
appreciate a response like "this patch sucks, do this to get it fixed." 
The bug hasn't even been triaged.
