Actually, SGen already compiles without __thread - the check in the
configure script is not necessary anymore.  I'll remove it.

Whether SGen works on MacOS is another question.  It did at one point
but I haven't tested it for some time.  The last I've heard from Geoff
a week ago or so was that it crashes somewhere in the build.
