Yep me too.  Using OpenSuse 10.2, upgraded from Mono 1.2.2 to 1.2.3 (from
the main Mono repo http://www.go-mono.com/download-stable/suse-102-x86_64). 
Now just as you say, rug never comes back from 'rug sl'.  Zen-updater
options are grayed out.  

Zmd service is running in the process list.  If I restart the process, I can
see zmd doing the 'parse-data', then 'updater', but this then grows to about
108MB of process usage; the 'updater' process then goes to a Zombie state
then dies.  Zmd remains running but client tools cannot talk to it.

So then I tried to use Smart --gui, but now this no longer works (I didn't
think Smart depends on Mono).
