I suppose that this is because developers prefer mailing-lists. Anyway, 
if you feel somewhat uncomfortable you could use Gmane, which is a 
usenet way of accessing mailing list, so it's a bit more "unobstrusive".

Another possibility would be to use a synchronization mechanism between 
mailing-lists/newsgroups and webforums like phpBB. I found a link[1] 
some time ago about this.
