If you want to do a split, I suspect it would be worthwhile to put
together a little tool ("automono"?) that generates Makefile.in and
configure.in and makes it drop-dead easy to do the auto-foo needed for a
library that gets installed into the GAC. Otherwise you'll probably have
to deal with a bunch of diverging Makefiles as each source tree gets its
own unique set of build tweaks...
