While there is a slowdown, it's not huge for being a microbenchmark.
I'm sure we can optimize the code later.
Please make sure the tests pass on the MS runtime and commit the code
and the tests: about 260 failures fixed is well worth a temporary slowdown.
Also, make sure there are no MSDOS line endings when you commit.
