You may ask on the GC mailing list, maybe Hans has an idea of why
it would be slower. If you can reproduce the slowdown with a test C
program it would be best.
As for the configure switch: until we know what causes the issue
it's premature and it wouldn't be the default, so the benefit to
the users would be 0.
