I was going to say try setting your locale to en_GB.UTF-8

  export LANG=en_GB.UTF-8

but I have just tried print the pound sign here and it does the same
thing :-( I then set 

  LANG=en_GB.is08859-1

and it works fine.  I think this behaviour has changed somewhere along
the line :-(
