[Mono-devel-list] problem building cvs

I am trying to build mono cvs.
The web site says to do "cd mono; make bootstrap" but there is no
Makefile in mono. So I run autogen.sh but automake is not happy at all.

I get a bunch of 
mono/mini/Makefile.am:244: warning: automake does not support conditional definition of libmono_la_SOURCES in libmono_static_la_SOURCES

and it ends with

**Error**: automake failed.

I got that with automake 1.8 but tried with 1.4 with similar results.

Any ideas?
