It only targets versioning. However I've seen very few (if any) library
name conflicts when working on quite big linux distribution (PLD), so I
believe the name issue is not that important. 

And in case of .NET assemblies have more meaningful names (like
Mono.Posix.dll) so possibility of name conflict is even lower.
