Yes as Miguel mentioned you have to build gc with --enable-thread=pthreads
and I would use alpha 5 as well.

I must say that mono is more stable, but still I can't use it for mcs
compiling the core, even though Miguel seems to be able to do so.  I'm
hoping that he will make a binary package, so that we all can benefit from a
stable build.

there were some problems for me building the .net 2.0 profile of mcs, 
but 1.1 went all right.
after editing gtkhtml-sharp.dll.config, there still is a problem with 
monodoc though:
