i tested this more:
this is on a gentoo box:
1. glibc-nptl-on, mono-nptl-on: muine freezes
2. glibc-nptl-off, mono-nptl-off: muine works
3. glibc-nptl-on, mono-nptl-off: muine freezes
so it seems to be a gentoo-nptl problem :(
