Maybe I'm mistaken but I thought I read somewhere that the interpreter is  
supported on Itanium, but there isn't an ia64 directory in mono/arch and  
libmonoarch.la is required by the interpreter ... so I was probably  
mistaken.

I started looking at http://www.go-mono.com/porting.html since this is  
probably the case; this page references a mono/metadata/endian.h file that  
doesn't exist in the latest CVS.  I'm new to working with compilers but I  
have done some (little) assembly coding in the past, so any advice is  
welcomed.
