I think there isn't going to be an elegant solution to this one.  The 
best idea I have so far is to try and use

where possible, and then think of as sane as possible values for the 
others.  Other then that it might have to turn into an ugly #if'd out 
piece of code for each platform, but hopefully this can be avoided.
