I was a bit brief - the author says there are changes coming in relation
to the way pointers are handled by the future clr. Possibly MS will
place restrictions on unsigned unverifiable code to support their next
generation secure computer initiative? That might not matter to mono.
Just speculation.
Article is interesting though.

Where did you hear that pointers will be removed?
In that article? Well in that case....

I think it would be very stupid to remove pointers in C#. MS can be
called lots of things, but stupid - naah.
