We too encountered this problem about a year ago in the openSMTP.NET project
(http://sourceforge.org/projects/opensmtp-net), and a nice solution to the
HTTPException you are encountering can be found in the GPL'd project source
code. It's unfortunate that MONO has decided to not to use a mature
2-year-old code base for a SMTP client, but I understand that sometimes it
can't be done (eg, Miguel's insistance on the use of CAMEL / JavaMail-like
API's).
