upgrade to 2.10.8.1 (the previous problem was with 2.10.5, according to my
comment on sept 24?) and still the same problem - while I have not touched my
code at all these last few months.

Did you really meant "master" (i.e. trunk and not "future 2.10.x")?

Is there anything I can try to see where the problem is?
