Either of the two proposed solutions sound good to me. (I especially like the
Environment variable idea)

Although they don't solve Miguel's Objection:

"As it is right now, the above approach does not really work, it would require
every COM user to manually use a Mono-specific API."

However only COM users who care about Release being called on the wrong thread,
would have to bother setting the environment variable. Everyone else would get
current behavior. (which works ok for lots of projects)
