Further information:

I thought it was strange that the Git Master Mono runtime didn't exhibit the
bug but the 20110104 nightly source tarball Mono did. 

I have cleanly rebuilt the 20110104 Mono runtime today and cannot get it to
exhibit the bug.

I have also cleanly rebuilt the 2.8.1 Mono runtime today and confirm that it
exhibits the bug (as Zoltan confirms above).

As 2.8.1 is the latest stable release, and the bug enables critical races where
they shouldn't be possible, it's a critical bug in my view.
