Jon,

  I'm not entirely certain what the exact cause it, but something you're doing
is breaking the underlying expectations of apple.  I've attached an even
simpler repo, that appears to mostly do what you want with a few minor
alignment issues of views, but probably easy enough to resolve).  Its not
immediately clear what you're doing different since I modeled it from your
code, but I'm inclined to believe that something in your pattern is breaking
underlying UISplitViewController assumptions.
