Two new points here,

Sometimes I simply receive a System.NullReference exception, seemingly from
mono.

It seems like there is something generally buggy with touch as I can also
occasionally reproduce these same exact problems with a custom view instead of
a custom surface view. However, it is much easier to reproduce in the surface
example provided here.

Whatever the problem is, it's causing custom views with a lot of touch code to
be extremely unstable.
