You miss the important bit of information from you post on the mailing list:

* Assertion: should not be reached at mini-darwin.c:241

Looking at the source code shows that there is an #ifdef that is not
implemented for x86_64 in the "mono_runtime_syscall_fork" function.

I also get this crash when building the mcs part of Mono from SVN (not
everytime of course, that would be too simple).
