To sum things up:

1- Without the adjustment mentioned in comment 14, then selecting a tab doesn't
move the text and image up, it's still on the same line as other unselected
tabs. Currently, the rectangle used to draw the selected tab is bigger, but
that's not enough to get tabs to have the proper look when selected.
That said, I agree the fix doesn't look very elegant. There may be a nicer way
to achieve this.

2- Images are vertically centered, indeed, but they should also be horizontally
centered in Fixed mode. This should appear in the test case above. The patch I
submitted fixes this issue.
