There are two bugs here.  The crash caused by the assertion failure and the
lockup of the test application.

I've fixed the assertion crash (the assertions were too strict) in trunk
(r151074) and backported them to 2.6 (r151075).

Would you mind filing a new bug for the freeze (you can assign it to me), so I
can close this one?
