Having given this a little more thought, I think reason #1 given above is
actually the reason we should hide them.

Every Java sample users see out there is going to point them to do it the
"wrong" (hard) way.  By taking that away, we nudge/force them down the easier
and "correct" path, which will save them plenty of headache in the long run.
