The example program posted by Veerapuram Varadhan fails with the same exception
originally reported using the following:

SLES 11 x64
mono 2.6.3
oracle x64 driver - 11.1.0.6.0

and 

openSuse 11.2
mono 2.6.3
oracle x64 driver - 11.1.0.6.0
