There were some issues I fixed and available in rev 155713. 

Now, I'm curious about you not getting the icon at *all*. Basically we need
that the gnome session has a notification area available. Could you take a
look, and comment? 

Because otherwise it would be odd, since we are just re-using a X
inter-communication stuff that should be supported in all gnome systems (at
least).
