Unlikely - from what I can see

#13 0x08064f36 in mini_init (filename=0xbf9f739b "../lib/2.1/smcs.exe",

this happens when running smcs.exe so it cannot be "caused by the way they use
the embedding API" because that's mono itself that's driving the show :-)
