Given that the VMware image and the VPC image differ only in some kernel
parameters and (apparently) the amount of RAM I feel certain this this is a RAM
issue and entirely outside my control.  Running with so little RAM also really
seems like a bad idea.

If you see this error again please attach the .xsession-errors file from the
user's home directory.
