An attempted backport to 2.4.2.3

We are motivated to test this change in our patched build of Mono 2.4.2.3, so I
tried synthesizing the changes suggested by the the two of you and tested this
backport attempt against the actual software. This seems to solve the problem
for us, but I am not sure that I properly understood Zoltan's objections, so if
you have any guidance, please let me know.
