OK.  It appears to work if I do:

   export MONO_SHARED_DIR="$HOME"

..which seems odd.  I was under the impression it was already using $HOME if
it exists.  Anyways, I guess this can be closed, it seems to work by setting
the shared dir myself.  Must be something weird going on in how the temporary
(build) user is being created.
