I'm wrong, my patch masks the unverifyable IL generated by mcs:
    IL_0000:  ldc.i4.1 
    IL_0001:  stloc.0 
    IL_0002:  br IL_0007
    IL_0007:  br IL_0007
    IL_000c:  ldloc.0 
    IL_000d:  brtrue IL_0002

The runtime crash above when handling the bad il still needs investigating tho.
