Sorry I couldn't narrow the case down further-- I made several attempts but
this was the only case I could consistently reproduce.

I did attempt simply writing a string out in the same manner (and skipping the
binaryformatter) but that worked just fine.

Also, the BinaryCopy method probably looks a little silly, but it previously
used 32kb buffers, which I removed to ensure that the buffering wasn't messing
around with the GZipStream's internal compression buffers.
