A test of 32-bit would have been much more telling, especially since the
complaint is regarding the CPU (and the Mono image is 32-bit).

If I understand correctly VMware exposes a lot of the underlying hardware so
it's definitely possible that SUSEs 32-bit kernel does not work on the i7.

Regarding using the latest Mono release on your installed openSUSE, please go
to http://www.go-mono.com/mono-downloads/ and follow the instructions there. 
If you get into trouble join us in #mono on irc.gnome.org and ask for help.

I would still be interested to know if you have the same problem with a 32-bit
openSUSE LiveCD.
